Fashion Doll. We came upon this photo and fell in love with the fashion doll look and the fantasy element of the photo. It's gorgeous, but we had questions. When fashion does not apply to the real world, how does it sell? Consumers notice the impossible and are drawn to it. The actual clothes that are sold and bought are quite everyday, the make-up less dramatic, and the setting less glamorous. Adults know and understand this complex difference. Do you think that ads with pictures like these are understood as fantasy to young children and young adults? Who explains this to them? And why is it not okay to dress like our fashion doll when images like this are in every media outlet in our consumer Gotham?

We found this disturbing "fairness cream" commercial from India. We are amazed that it exist so we can display why the media has so much to do with negative body images of women all over the world. Men are also greatly affected by this too.

Some people become outraged with individuals who lighten their complexions with creams and cosmetic peels. Why is it anyone's business anyway? Some people think it's self hatred for one's heritage, or a method of cheating destiny to create what one believes will be a better life.

The problem here is not just the self image of the person who is dark and seeks to lighten. They are quite fine. The problem is with the rest of the world including you. Truthfully, are you more attracted to people with lighter skin tones or darker ones?

Dear Pop Culture Fashion: This is my confession. I really think that models in the fashion industry should start out their careers no earlier than 18. Designers should be required to use more models in their shows from at least 3 age groups - 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's. There are many beautiful women in these groups or older. I pose the question, what happens to a model when her career is over by age 27. There are many who last longer, but others are just not hired by the designers anymore. Designers would rather hire a 16 year old. This doesn't make any sense to me.

Dear Pop Culture Fashion: This is my confession. I am a model and I love the fashion industry but it's so brutal. People often say, "Don't feed the models". This statement is probably intended to be funny as hell. And it's a way of playing with the truth that yes that most of us aren't naturally thin and we are often fasting, but it hurts so much that this is a joke. We are usually fasting because the thinner you are the more work you can get. It's really serious and no one wants to ever talk about it. Many male friends of mine will laugh at this statement right in front of my face, musicians, actors, promoters and nightlife people especially. The preference is openly for the skinny model. Sadly magazines, newspapers, and the entire fashion industry is responsible for this which causes models and celebs to go through drastic measures to appear thin. I don't know. It sucks, but to some of us in the business the moto is "if you can't beat them join them" or do what ever it takes to keep working.

Dear Pop Culture Fashion: This is my confession. My friend Mari, gets so much more attention than I do. It's a matter of opinion why, but she just so happens to be rail thin, 5'5" at 103 lbs. We are the same height and I am staying steady between 110 - 115 lbs now. I can't get any smaller without serverly harming myself. I should be proud of myself for loosing all the weight I gained last year. I was a staggering 160 lbs. I was so self concious and miserable. As soon as I shed the pounds I got more work and more attention. Society is so effed up! But that is what happened. Now I am friends with Mari who is younger and thinner and everyone's attention is on her. They totally forgot about me. She's stolen all of my friends and it sucks so badly because I don't have a leg to stand here but being jealous. Fair enough. But I think our relationship is based on this strange sense of competition. I get so angry because she will talk about how hungry she is and she hasn't eaten all day. Once we get to a place to get food, she says she'll wait until later or she's not hungry anymore. By this time I am so hungry that I end up getting the food and spend all night totally guilty about eating on a binge. Is she fucking sabotaging me? I think so. I think I hate her guts.
